Renaissance perspective offered a powerful system for organizing a believable three-dimensional space from a fixed viewpoint. Its influence lasted for centuries.
By the early twentieth century, Picasso and Georges Braque began to challenge that inherited model. Objects could be shown from shifting angles, flattened and rebuilt across the picture surface.
Cubism did not simply abandon observation. It asked whether one fixed instant and one fixed eye were enough to describe an object at all.
